Temperzone Aquanex R32 Inverter In-line Space Heating Heat Pump Water Heaters

A new approach to heat-pump water heating is here. Introducing Aquanex MWH by Temperzone, products that satisfy applications for commercial hydronic space heating.

The design approach for the Aquanex product line mostly varies from the generic one-size-fits-all approach taken by many other products on the market. Aquanex products are designed to be optimally applied to the specific application. This generates a more cost-effective system overall when effectively utilised.

For the application of space heating, the MWH range is designed as inverter-based, in-line systems which are installed without the use of an intermediate buffer tank (note – an inline tank may be required in cold regions where a minimum water volume is needed for de-ice operation and system volume does not meet minimum requirements). Temperzone in-line systems directly provide the capacity required for the application by controlling the supply water temperature and varying the water flow rates to meet the required heating demand. Aquanex MWH units maintain a fixed supply water temperature of 25°C to 55°C.

These direct heating systems differ greatly from the generic approach taken by other products on the market, where the water heater heats an intermediate buffer tank, and the heating demand is supplied from the tank as part of a primary and secondary circuit system design.

While the in-line approach requires some modifications to conventional boiler system-based designs, the greatly increased energy savings achieved, especially under part-load conditions, make it well worthwhile. This approach can also reduce installed system capital cost due to the potential for reduced componentry associated with a conventional system.

A further benefit has been the ease with which these systems allow for full system integration as “turn-key” systems with integrated controls. Installation is often as easy as connecting the water pipes, setting the required design water temperature, and letting the system take care of the rest.

Aquanex heat pump water heaters utilize R32 refrigerant. Due to a smaller refrigerant charge and a reduced refrigerant GWP of 677, these R32 refrigerant systems represent a 75-80% reduction in overall GWP per kW of heating when compared to R410A systems (GWP 2088)*.

Aquanex heat pump water heaters are available with Enhanced Vapour Injection (EVI). EVI technology is specially designed for colder climates and provides the assurance that comfort levels will be maintained at low ambient temperatures. EVI hardware works in combination with Temperzone’s proprietary UC8 software, to inject vapour directly into the scroll plate of the compressor. The resultant cooling on the compressor provides increased capacity in cold conditions.

EVI allows for:

  • All year-round performance
  • Increased capacity at low ambient temperature (down to -10 °C)
  • Unlocks the full potential of the compressor
  • Guarantees compressor protection under high loads

The Aquanex R32 Inverter In-line heat pump water heaters are available in two models, the MWH 900 and MWH 2000.

The energy-saving potential of the Aquanex range application has been evident from the Dargaville Hospital project, funded by EECA’s Crown loans programme, where a centralised diesel boiler system was replaced with a distributed heat-pump system with integrated controls. Aside from a seasonal heating signal, no further controls work was required for these units.

The space and domestic water heating loads were separately heated by dedicated Aquanex heat pumps suited for individual applications. An independent EECA report showed that after one year the hospital was set to save $111,000 on energy costs and $41,600 on maintenance.
