Climate Control at One of the World's Largest Automated Distribution Centres

In the heart of Kemps Creek, New South Wales, a significant project demonstrates the advancement of automated distribution. Spanning an impressive 187,000 square metres—equivalent to about 25 rugby league fields—the state-of-the-art Coles Automated Distribution Centre (ADC) stands as one of the largest and most productive facilities of it’s kind in the world. With a 66,000 square metre building, this massive operation is set to process over four million cartons per week, ultimately serving 229 stores across New South Wales and the ACT.

Beyond it’s immense scale and advanced automation, with a 3.5-megawatt rooftop solar solution, the Kemps Creek ADC is a testament to sustainable innovation.

One important aspect in creating this next-generation facility is to ensure a highly efficient, reliable HVAC system maintains optimal conditions across such an expansive space. That’s where Paramount Airconditioning, in collaboration with Temperzone, stepped in. The facility demanded a highly efficient, scalable air conditioning solution to meet key internal design condition parameters while minimising operational costs and environmental impact.

Paramount Airconditioning and Temperzone collaborated to deliver an industry leading HVAC solution. The final system included:

34 Temperzone OPA Econex Pro packaged units

  • 25 units with 182 kW capacity, delivering high airflow rates of 10,000 L/s
  • 9 units with 140 kW capacity, providing airflow of 6,800 L/s

Advanced Variable Technologies for superior energy efficiency and climate control
R32 Refrigerant for lower global warming potential
Four inverter compressors per unit, optimising performance across the duty cycle
EC plug indoor fans & EC axial outdoor fans for energy-efficient airflow
Custom airflow paths to accommodate the unique distribution centre layout
c.pCO advanced controllers with BACnet compatibility, ensuring precise monitoring and control

One of the standout achievements of this project was the ability to deliver a system that met high energy efficiency targets. This innovative solution ensured reliable climate control while significantly reducing energy consumption.

The integration of economisers, pressure differential sensors for constant airflow monitoring, and dirty filter sensing further enhanced efficiency and system monitoring capabilities. With a focus on long-term cost savings, the system ensures lower operational expenses without compromising on performance.

The success of the Kemps Creek ADC HVAC installation demonstrates the power of collaboration and engineering ingenuity. Temperzone’s expertise in local manufacturing and Paramount Airconditioning’s commitment to high-performance solutions helped deliver exceptional efficiency, and reliability.

As businesses continue to seek more cost-effective and efficient ways to manage large-scale operations, the Kemps Creek ADC stands as a shining example of what’s possible when innovation meets ambition.
